Cartagena with Your Dog: Tips for Travelling with Pets

How to protect your dog from the heat, where to walk and hotels that welcome pets free of charge

Hammock by the courtyard pool at Casa Bugó, Cartagena Old City

More and more travellers arrive in Cartagena with their dog. The city is easy to enjoy with the whole family, with a little care for the heat and the Caribbean sun. This is what we recommend to guests who stay at Casa Bugó with their pet.

Before your trip

  • Check with your airline about travelling with pets: each one asks for different documents and carriers.
  • Visit your vet before you leave and bring the vaccination record.
  • Tell your hotel that you are coming with your pet, so everything is ready.

The heat: the most important thing

  • Walk early in the morning or after sunset. The midday sun is very strong.
  • Watch the ground: cobblestones and asphalt get very hot. If it burns your hand, it burns their paws.
  • Always carry water: a bottle and a foldable bowl on every walk.
  • Never leave your dog alone in a car, not even for a few minutes.

Where to walk

  • The city walls at sunrise or sunset: cool, wide and with sea views.
  • The streets of the Old City and Getsemaní in the cooler hours, with their squares and balconies.
  • Shady squares to rest between walks.

Beaches, restaurants and boat trips

  • Ask first: some restaurants with terraces welcome pets, others don't.
  • Boat trips and island tours: not every tour accepts pets. Check when you book.

Hotels that welcome pets free of charge

At Casa Bugó your pet is welcome at no extra cost, in both of our houses:

  • Casa Bugó Centro Histórico, on Calle del Cuartel inside the Walled City: a colonial mansion with a courtyard pool and rooftop terrace.
  • Casa Bugó Arsenal, in Getsemaní: a boutique house with a rooftop pool.

Both include breakfast and 24-hour reception. Just let us know when you book that you are travelling with your pet.
